Birth to 5 Matters a new non-statutory guidance developed by the sector for the sector, in response to the government’s reforms to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in England, launches on Wednesday 31/3/21 . This work was led by a coalition of early years sector bodies.
The Early Years Coalition
The Early Years Coalition which includes the Montessori St Nicholas charity, is a group of sector bodies which came together in 2018 when the government announced its intention to review the Early Learning Goals. This became a wider reform of the EYFS Statutory Framework and non-statutory guidance. Concerns about the process and objectives led all the main bodies representing the early years sector to come together to offer support and advice to ministers and officials, and act as a voice for the sector.
Prior to producing the Birth to Five Matters guidance, the coalition:
- produced a review of the research literature from the last ten years to identify evidence which should be informing the changes. This was publicly launched and published and offered to government to inform its thinking.
- carried out a survey of 3000 practitioners’ views on what aspects of the EYFS should be changed to support ministers’ stated objectives. This was also published and shared with government.
